FIBA Asia – Hong Kong pip Malaysia; Taipei, Jordan win
TEHRAN (FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Men): Hong Kong China recovered rather well in the closing moments to beat Malaysia 85-82 in a Group IV Quarterfinal round game on Sunday.
A second quarter surge saw Malaysia nudge ahead of their East Asian rivals, but Hong Kong bounced back and held their nerve in the final minutes to post their first win in the championship.
Jordan and Chinese Taipei, meanwhile, won their games for a possible 9th place showdown.
Jordan, who lost out to Korea and Kazakhstan in the race to the top rung, toyed around with United Arab Emirates or an 88-49 win.
And Chinese Taipei who were nudged out by Lebanon and Philippines in the preliminary round defeated Saudi Arabia 109-92.
“We missed our chances to make it to the higher round,” said Chinese Taipei coach Yang I-Feng.
“Now my boys are determined to prove they are actually better than some of the results,” he added.
