LIB / SYR – Syria advance despite defeat
TEHRAN (FIBA Asia U18 Championship for Men): Syria needed to avoid a big defeat against Lebanon in their final Group I game on Tuesday in order to advance to the last four.
The West Asian team did just that, losing 80-90, and will take on Group II toppers Iran in the semifinal on Thursday.
Iran had beaten Syria 100-73 in a Group D preliminary round game.
Tonight, only a win by Lebanon at least 14 points would have made any difference to Syria’s progress.
That non-occurrence of that margin kept defending champions China out of the semifinals.
Lebanon, of course, had a chance only if they had won by a whopping 35 point margin.
Ahmad Ibrahim scored a game high 34 points for Lebanon and pulled down nine rebounds.
Samar Bawadekji led the scoring for Syria with 25 points.
Scores
Lebanon 90 (Ahmad Ibrahim 34, Ralph Akl 11) bt Syria 80 (Samar Bawadekji 25, Tarek Al Jade 12). Quarterwise Scores: 30-20, 45-37, 64-56.
